Lord Charles Danvers, still mourning his lost love Charlotte, hopes to escape from his ghosts at the gala coming-of-age celebrations for the son of his oldest friend. All is jubilation and proper respectability until the evening is shattered by a brutal murder. The police are quick to point to a quarrelsome farmer, but Danvers has his doubts. Is the real culprit much closer to home? And does Danvers owe the greater loyalty to an old friend or to the truth? Then, Danver is even more unsettled by the entrance of the alluring Lady Antonia Hoover.
The first in the Lord Danvers Investigates series, A Most Inconvenient Death is a Victorian true-crime novel The Stanfield Hall Murders were the sensation they are portrayed to be and the elaborate coming of age celebrations and the ensuing dramatic trial are all recorded history.

A Most Inconvenient Death Lord Danvers Investigates Book 1 edition by Donna Fletcher Crow Religion Spirituality eBooks

I don't know why I have not discovered this author before now, but I'm delighted finally to be introduced to Donna Fletcher Crow! While I admit that I found certain short sections of this to be a little slow-moving, this is a well-told story and I appreciated Ms Crow's respect for her reader's intelligence.

I am not a Victorian scholar and cannot speak to the criticisms of a couple of other reviewers regarding some of the finer historical details. Nothing seemed out of place to me as a "layperson" in that regard. I can, however, come to Ms Crow's defense and speak to issues raised in regards to "shallowness" of philosophical thought and "unrealistic" behavior in a major character who is a child. As one other reviewer put it, were they reading the same book I just read? I admit that not everyone wants their mystery novel "interrupted," even occasionally, by deeper references, and that's a valid and preference, but I would say it's not fair for a reader to label such references as shallow just because s/he prefers them not to be there or perhaps simply doesn't quite understand them or agree with them. I found such philosophical references to be an integral part of the storyline and character development and quite gripping, especially as the story built to it's exciting climax. There were great layers of depth of thought being presented. The reader can take them or leave them. Just don't say they weren't there. On a more minor point, I will add that Pip's cartwheels and handsprings are totally realistic! As a 20-year Early Childhood administrator, I assure you that while some children do not have the physical skills Pip displays, most would certainly do the same if they could, and many can! And like Pip, they usually don't look where they're going!

I'm excited to have had this introduction to Ms Crow's body of work and look forward to enjoying more of it.

A Most Inconvenient Death Lord Danvers Investigates Book 1 edition by Donna Fletcher Crow Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

I hadn't read any of these books before, and just got this because it sounded interesting. It was. The characters are believable, and I like that the author brings their beliefs and doubts into her characters. Since the vast majority of people have a belief in some deity, I always find it odd that in so many books what has such a large role in the lives of real people has no place in the lives of the characters. I appreciate as well that doubts are handled respectfully, as are sincere religious beliefs, and that people of faith are not portrayed as "automatic hypocrites," but as imperfect humans who have found a reason to keep trying to be better.
The mystery was good, and the solution not obvious until the end, which I also enjoyed.
These aren't deep books, but for a quick, entertaining read with believable characters, they'll do nicely.
I truly enjoyed reading this interesting book. Imsincerely hope there will be others in this series.

I will be waiting for further mystery.
This promises to be a series I will be following. I love a good mystery especially when character development and plot are the spotlight instead of run from the bad guys, found by the bad guys, run from the bad guys, and repeat over and over again. The main character was very likable.
The story itself was a little disjointed, but the characters came to life. It was written as close to the mores of the time. The murder was not easily unraveled.
It took longer to read then most books i read. It was interesting just not enough to keep me with it. Then when i got about three fourths through it changed and I found it very interesting, so much I was thinking of purchasing book 2 to see what Lord Danvers and His lady interest Antonia.
The author does a good job of capturing the feel and flavor of Victorian England, the attitudes and mores of the various social classes. However she tends to go on at length about the philosophies of Mills, and the religious strictures of a puritanical Vicar. It makes for a tedious struggle to get through some sections of the book to the real meat of the story.
I truly enjoyed this murder mystery, I hope it is the beginning of a series!!! The characters were quirky, evil, beautiful, ugly but I think my absolutely a favorite was Pip, who is the young son of one of Danvers' servants, and this little guy saved the day, saved a life, and gave me quiet giggles under the blankey last night, because I had to finish it and it was 2AM! (I try not to wake up the hubs or the cat) It is never a pretty picture, the cat thinks its an excuse to get fed.....go figure! I liked how the author mixed religion vs scientific theory, and in this era that would have been a dichotomy for the learned.....they were trying to work out where science and religion can intersect.....hmmmmm, not so much different from now. I also liked the minor characters, our author did not leave them 2 dimensional, I liked getting to know them. I noticed some did not like the book, and for the life of me I cannot figure out why! Maybe they read a different book?
